Changing car windshield wiper blades is a simple DIY task that takes 5–10 minutes, no special tools needed. The core step is matching your wiper’s connector type (the part that attaches to the car’s wiper arm) and following its release mechanism.

Step 1: Prepare and Locate the Connector

Lift the wiper arm away from the windshield gently. Don’t let it snap back—this can scratch the glass.

Identify your wiper’s connector type. The three most common are:
Hook-type: The most popular; the wiper has a small hook that clips onto the arm.
Pin-type: Uses a small pin to lock the wiper to the arm.
Push-button: Has a plastic button on the connector; pressing it releases the wiper.

Step 2: Remove the Old Wiper Blades

Follow the action for your connector type:
Hook-type: Press the small plastic tab on the wiper’s connector, then slide the wiper down and off the hook.
Pin-type: Pull out the small pin (use pliers if it’s tight), then separate the wiper from the arm.
Push-button: Press and hold the button, then pull the wiper straight away from the arm.

Step 3: Install the New Wiper Blades

Check the new wiper’s direction—most have a “driver side” or “passenger side” label (don’t mix them up).
Attach it by reversing the removal step:
Hook-type: Slide the new wiper’s hook onto the arm, then push up until you hear a “click.”
Pin-type: Align the wiper with the arm’s hole, insert the pin, and push it in fully.
Push-button: Align the connector with the arm, push until it clicks, then release the button.
Gently lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield.

Step 4: Test the New Wipers

Turn on your car’s windshield wipers and spray washer fluid. Check that the wiper blades glide smoothly, no streaks or skipping—this confirms they’re installed correctly.
