Using your car’s windshield wiper blades correctly in rainy weather can maintain clear visibility and improve driving safety. Here are the specific usage methods and precautions:
1. Pre-Activation Inspection of Windshield Wiper Blades
Ensure the wiper blades are in good condition:
The wiper blade rubber strips should not be damaged, aged, or hardened; otherwise, they will not wipe cleanly and may scratch the glass.
Glass Cleaning:
Keep the windshield free of visibly dirty dirt so that the wipers can work more smoothly.
2. Select the appropriate speed based on the rain intensity
Windshield Wiper Blades
The wiper switch on most vehicles is located on a stalk next to the steering wheel, allowing you to adjust the speed:
| Wipe Speed | | Applicable Scenarios | | Operating Instructions |
| INT (Intermittent) | | Light rain/drizzle | | Adjust the interval time via the knob (e.g., 2-10 seconds) |
| LO (Low Speed) | | Moderate rain | | Continuous low-speed wiping |
| HI (High Speed) | | Heavy rain/downpour | | Continuous fast wiping |
| MIST (Fog Wiper) | | Sudden splash/temporary cleaning | | Push the stalk upwards for a single wipe |
Rear Windshield Wiper blades (Common in SUVs, Hatchbacks, and Station Wagons)
The rear wiper control switch is usually also on the right-hand stalk, generally at the end of the stalk.
Rotating the end knob:
- Rotating to the ON position will cause the rear wipers to wipe intermittently.
- Rotating to the OFF position will turn off the rear wipers.
Pushing the end knob forward or backward:
Usually, pushing it forward will spray washer fluid from the rear of the vehicle to clean the rear window. Some car models also have automatic wiper functions that adjust their speed automatically based on rainfall.
3. Using Windshield Washer Fluid
Turn on the washer function (pull the lever towards yourself) to spray windshield washer fluid and help remove dirty water and mud.
Washing the windshield in rainy weather can remove oil film mixed with rainwater, but it’s best to use it only when visibility allows.
4. Precautions for using windshield wiper blades
- Turn on the wipers in advance: Turn them on in advance when entering a rainy area or encountering rain on the highway to avoid sudden obstruction of vision.
- Avoid dry wiping: Do not turn on the wipers when there is no rain or the glass is very dry, as this can accelerate the wear of the rubber strips.
- Winter freeze prevention: When parking in cold, rainy, or snowy weather, you can lift the wipers or leave a gap to prevent the rubber strips from freezing to the glass.
- Slow down in heavy rain: Even with high-speed wipers, visibility cannot be completely guaranteed; you need to reduce your speed.
5. Special Scenarios Handling
Due to poor visibility in heavy rain:
Turn on the HI mode wipers + use the air conditioning to defog.
Turn on the front and rear fog lights (not hazard lights).
Slow down and maintain a safe distance.
Wiper noise/skipping:
Immediately stop and check if the rubber blades are damaged.
Temporary solution: Wipe the wiper blade rubber blades with a tissue.
6. Tips to Improve Driving Safety in Rainy Weather
Turn on low beam headlights or fog lights (not high beam headlights) to improve visibility.
Keep the defroster system on to prevent fogging on the inside of the windows.
Reduce speed and increase following distance.
Replace the wipers regularly (generally every 6-12 months) to ensure wiping performance; and choose high-quality windshield washer fluid to prevent fogging.
